| Why is everyone beating up on the Planet ??? |
There are no punches being pulled. Everyone that has ever felt slighted by the Planet Fitness chain is in attack mode. From the comical perspective on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" to EFS writer Zach Nicolay's rational perspective , everyone is pointing out that the emperor has no clothes.
Why should we care?
Well we all understand that even though a company has the right to refuse service to anyone, they cannot discriminate against any minority under the guise of being righteous. It might fly somewhere else, but it just won't last long in America.
Why?
Because very few Americans will take sh@^ from anyone. It's just the way we are wired I guess. Please don't misunderstand. I'm not trying to suggest that supporting Planet Fitness is unpatriotic. The facts are that if you support one of these gyms you are probably like most people. You want to go to a gym and you don't want to spend a lot. That is cool and I get it. Heck! I did it a long time ago when Planet Fitness first came along.
The problem is that if you support an organization that acts in a questionable way, you are indirectly responsible. It's kind of like seeing someone get mugged in your driveway and not doing anything to stop it.
Some folks can simply sit back and think,
"That's not my problem. That person shouldn't have been doing (insert action here) and look at how he's dressed. He was asking for it."
It's bad enough that you let someone be treated in this manner, but then you keep on financially supporting the organization because it's convenient for you. Some folks don't even visit the gym, but are too lazy to cancel their membership. While they procrastinate that poor 285lbs bodybuilder is still being figuratively sent to the back of the bus.
I want to remind everyone that before Planet Fitness came along, there were lots of mom and pop gyms everywhere. Planet Fitness entered the game like the Borg from Star Trek. Blockbuster Video is a more realistic example of this type of business, but thankfully there is such a thing as Karma :-)
The attacks are warranted and they will stop when Planet Fitness stops ... or goes out of business ... or we find something better to talk about because we are giving them way too much free press.
