One of the most important things a midlifer can do is to build up his/her core strength. Now I am not talking about going to the gym and doing hours of these bizarre looking exercises on inflatable balls and juggling kettle-bells while balancing on Bosu balls. If that is your thing then by all means, have at it. I am talking about the basic movements that most pro athletes do to get a powerful core to protect and propel them through their sports.
One of the things I see regularly in gyms is people participating in exercises that are incorrectly prescribed and done so in a haphazard manner. Midlifers tend to do this even more often than the newcomers because we lean on our past experiences to direct our energies in the gym and are less likely to ask for help because this.
Add to this mix the fact that the fitness industry will fill the need for core strength with all sorts of cool gadgets ( at a profit ) and you've got the potential for a perfect storm of disinformation. In my next few posts we will examine the benefits of core strength and very basic / inexpensive ways to build it.
