Strength Athletes in Midlife: Tom Roselli Interview

Raw Unity Elite Lightweights
At this year's Europa Expo in Hartford, an old acquaintance of mine got his 540 pound raw squat  into the record books and in the top 20 of all time at 165 lbs.  Tom Roselli is a Rhode Island strength athlete who I met about a decade ago.  In the picture above, he stands with other elite, lightweight athletes immediately after the 2013 Raw Unity Meet (the top competition in the USA for unequipped powerlifters).

Why would I write about actively competing, elite level powerlifters on a blog about fitness in midlife?

Surprise!  Tom (2nd from the left) is in his 40's and Tony Conyers (at the upper right) is in his 50's!!!!  And for all of you unfamiliar with the science of strength, men's physical strength peaks around the mid to late thirties.  This is usually followed by a rapid decline, but not as much for aging powerlifters.

I gave Tom a laundry list of questions about fitness and here is what he had to say:

About Me ...

I am Rolando Manso.  I am a father, husband, son, brother, employee, and fledgling blogger.
This blog is meant to help others either get fit or stay fit while entering midlife.

Entering midlife made me feel my mortality enough to make me seriously reflect on my life.  There were many things that I had wanted to accomplish that somehow got lost over the years.
I always wanted to be a published writer.  Though I never had much skill in it, few talents impressed me more. Strength training was another passion of mine. I had dabbled in various sports and was ranked an elite powerlifter for a few years.
I completed in multiple federations at amateur level and I even managed to qualify for the pros in the summer of 2004.
